Maintenance and cleaning of your cap

Caps need less attention than hats do. They're more flexible and resume their shape when put again on the head. They can be stored into a cupboard without much caution. Well, as a matter of common sense, do not stack your encyclopaedias on!

Never use the washing machine, hand washing only!

When there is a spot, here is a cleaning guide according to the material:

Wool felt cap

You already know that wool is a dust catcher! To dust it, use a brush (the same as for your clothes). For a better result, use the brush against the grain by making circles counterclockwise.

- Spot: To wipe out a spot, place the cap over water vapor (use a pot, an iron, or a kettle) in order to humidify it. Then with a brush, rub the spot with Marseille soap.

- Grease stain: Use some trichloroethylene (usually used for pullovers) or another similar dry cleaner.
Beware: dab the stain with the cloth, certainly do not rub vigourously from right to left; by doign so, you could spread it. Leave it to dry and watch out: if an aureole appears, gently clean with water and soap. Leave it to dry.

Cloth cap

This applies specially to cotton and canvas caps.

- Spot: For a small spot, use Marseille soap and a brush, or baby wipes.

- Grease stain: Use some trichloroethylene (mostly used for pullovers) or another similar dry cleaner.
Beware: dab the stain with the cloth, certainly do not rub vigourously from right to left; by doign so, you could spread it. Leave it to dry and watch out: if an aureole appears, gently clean with water and soap. Leave it to dry.

Leather cap

All of our leather caps are waterproof and then need not much care. However, if you want to give yours some pep or remove a persistent blot, please do use specialised cleaning products.

- Spot: For a mere spot, use a wet cloth, or a specialised cleaning product for leather (cleaning kit).

- Grease stain: If the stain is recent, sprinkle generously the leather with talc or "Terre de Sommières (a sort of clay which you would find in every organic shop in France and in Navarre). Wait a few hours to allow the grease to be soaked, then brush the leather.
If the stain is stubborn, use a hairdryer and heat the leather (from a distance of 10cm) in order to reactivate the grease. Then apply the talc or the "Terre de Sommières" as explained above.
